Intercultural Development Inventory: Guide Development Without Ranking People or Cultures

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 500

The score opens the inquiry

A model-based self-report assessment can guide intercultural development when version, licensing, population, and behavioral evidence remain part of the interpretation.

Premise

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) gives intercultural development a structured measurement language. Built from the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, it examines recurring orientations toward cultural difference and similarity rather than merely asking whether respondents endorse diversity. The executive value lies in turning an abstract aspiration into a developmental hypothesis about perspective taking and adaptation. The boundary is equally important: the IDI interprets standardized self-report responses through its model, so whether a manager communicates effectively across cultures still has to be shown in the intercultural work itself.
