Mehrabian’s Studies of Inconsistent Attitude Communication

Knowledge

Mehrabian’s 1967 studies examined judgments of liking or disliking from simplified conflicting cues. They compared verbal with vocal information and facial with vocal expression in separate experiments. Their useful lesson concerns incongruence and clarification, while channel weights do not quantify all meaning or reveal a speaker’s true attitude.

Effects, Biases & Phenomena

Identifies a bounded pattern in judgment, behavior or communication and the conditions under which it appears. Naming the pattern makes a recurring difficulty recognizable; it does not make the pattern inevitable or supply a complete explanation.
