Personalization can narrow exposure but algorithms networks user choice and media supply must be separated before assigning cause
Premise
Eli Pariser’s Filter Bubble made a genuine concern legible: personalized digital systems can show different users different informational worlds without revealing the selection process. Ranking, recommendation, search, social networks, and behavioral data can improve relevance while making unfamiliar perspectives less likely to appear.
The metaphor becomes misleading when personalization or homogeneity is treated as proof of algorithmic isolation. Similar exposure can arise from friendship networks, subscriptions, search terms, user choice, market segmentation, permissions, or several mechanisms interacting. Pariser’s 2011 argument was agenda-setting and democratic critique, not a validated theory with an operational threshold or universal effect.
