Communication Process Mapping: Find the Break Before Adding More Messages

Find the break before resending

A transmission map helps leaders separate delivery failure from misunderstanding and failed execution.

Premise

When communication fails, organizations often respond by increasing volume. A Shannon-based process map changes the diagnosis: it decomposes one communication event into production, encoding, transmission, reconstruction, interpretation, and confirmation. That distinction matters operationally because a message can arrive intact yet produce different meanings, or be understood correctly without triggering the required action. For executives, the map is a way to locate the break and assign the right remedy rather than treating every problem as insufficient communication.
