Anxiety and Uncertainty: Keep Cross-Boundary Judgment Open

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 082

Keep expectations open to correction

Effective intercultural communication requires workable levels of apprehension and prediction, not their elimination

Premise

Cross-boundary communication often fails before anyone chooses the wrong words. Participants enter with incomplete expectations about intent, status, norms, and likely consequences. Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory explains why accurate interpretation depends on managing both the uncertainty surrounding another person and the anxiety attached to possible outcomes.

For executives, the model challenges two convenient assumptions: that cultural knowledge guarantees competence and that confidence signals understanding. A leader can know the etiquette and still misread the encounter because apprehension narrows attention, stereotypes replace observation, or familiarity creates more certainty than the evidence supports.
