Weighted kappa distinguishes the seriousness of different category disagreements through an explicit weighting scheme. Linear and quadratic weights are different design choices, not interchangeable improvements. Select and report defensible weights before interpreting the coefficient, and retain the distinction between consistent ratings and valid measurement.
