The instruction also defines a relationship
Eight relational-message dimensions expose how an interaction positions people without rating the relationship as a whole.
Premise
Two supervisors can deliver identical instructions while communicating different relationships—receptive and equal in one exchange, dominant and distant in another. Burgoon and Hale’s Relational Communication Scale makes that second layer measurable. For executives, the insight is that content efficiency does not exhaust communication performance. The instrument records perceived relational meaning in a specified interaction; it does not measure overall relationship satisfaction, compatibility, professional competence, or the objective quality of a partnership.
