Platformization: Map the Dependencies Behind Digital Reach

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 472

Someone else owns the audience

Platformization shows how infrastructure, markets, data practices, and governance can reorganize communication once an external platform becomes more than an optional channel

Premise

A platform becomes strategically consequential when other organizations must reorganize work around its infrastructure, metrics, markets, data, and rules. Platformization names that broader process. It moves analysis beyond “which channel performs best?” toward the dependencies created when publishing, recruitment, commerce, customer access, or public engagement becomes organized through an external intermediary.

The executive problem is control. Reach may improve while the organization becomes dependent on ranking systems, monetization criteria, identity services, analytics, moderation, or access terms it cannot set. Communication capacity can therefore expand and become less autonomous at the same time.
