Hon–Grunig Relationship Battery: Measure the Relationship, Not the Campaign

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 217

The relationship outlasts the campaign

Assess how a defined public perceives six relationship outcomes without turning communication activity into proof of relational quality

Premise

The Hon–Grunig relationship battery measures how a defined public perceives its relationship with a particular organization. It shifts evaluation beyond media placements, exposure, attendance, or short-term attitude change toward six longer-term outcomes: control mutuality, trust, satisfaction, commitment, exchange relationship, and communal relationship.

For executives, the six-part profile reveals tensions that a favorability score can hide. An organization may appear competent yet unresponsive, or reliable yet unwilling to share influence. The dimensions are neither stages nor a moral ranking. They structure inquiry into the relationship; they do not establish its objective quality or prove that communication produced it.
