Peers correct, managers wait
The Feedback Environment Scale distinguishes supervisor and coworker conditions so improvement efforts target the right source and barrier.
Premise
Annual appraisals are not a complete account of how employees receive useful performance information. The Feedback Environment Scale (FES) measures employees’ perceptions of everyday feedback conditions around supervisors and coworkers. It separates credibility, quality, delivery, favorable and unfavorable feedback, availability, and encouragement to seek information.
A high volume of comments may coexist with a poor feedback environment. When employees cannot safely ask for clarification, adding more feedback meetings will not necessarily solve the problem. Senior teams need to establish whether information is absent, untrustworthy, late, difficult to obtain, or risky to request.
