Family Communication Patterns Theory: Do Not Mistake Agreement for Understanding

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 535

Everyone agreed, two siblings worried

Family Communication Patterns Theory clarifies how discussion norms and authority expectations govern what information enters consequential family decisions

Premise

Agreement at a family meeting may indicate shared understanding—or an expectation that dissent is unacceptable. The same medical instructions can circulate through households that differ sharply in who may question, contradict, or reinterpret them. Family Communication Patterns Theory explains these differences through conversation and conformity orientations.

Organizations communicating with families can misread consensus as comprehension. A clinician, school administrator, or family-enterprise adviser may hear a single spokesperson and overlook the knowledge or objections of others. The executive consequence is procedural: determine whether the communication setting allows concerns to surface before relying on an apparently settled decision.

Model

In this series, Model names the editorial family primarily used to understand and explain communication: theories, frameworks, effects, traditions, principles and other conceptual resources. It is an umbrella for a route into the field, not a claim that every included object is a predictive model.
