Communication Climate: Diagnose What People Expect After They Speak

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 228

The response teaches people what to say next

Communication Climate shows how recurring responses make candor learning and challenge safer or more defensive across an organization

Premise

An organization can provide channels for candor and still teach people to remain silent. Communication Climate directs attention to what employees expect will happen when they question, disagree, admit uncertainty, or report risk. Those expectations accumulate across interactions. A supportive sentence cannot repair a pattern of punishment, and one difficult meeting does not establish a defensive climate.

Gibb supplied the interaction grammar in 1961 through six supportive and defensive pairs. Redding broadened the lens in 1972 by connecting climate with managerial communication, participation, trust, openness, credibility, and performance. Together they show why climate is more than tone or employee satisfaction: it is a recurring organizational condition that shapes what information can enter decisions.
