OCCI: Read Conflict Strategies as Situational Communication

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 210

The strategy changes with the counterpart

Profile nonconfrontation, solution orientation, and control without turning reported tactics into personality types or universal prescriptions

Premise

The Organizational Communication Conflict Instrument measures reported communication strategies used in organizational conflict relationships. Linda L. Putnam and Charmaine E. Wilson designed it to move from abstract “styles” toward communicative tactics. Its three dimensions are nonconfrontation, solution orientation, and control.

For executives, the instrument makes withdrawal, collaborative problem solving, compromise, and forceful advocacy more visible without pretending that one score defines a person. Strategy use varies with authority, stakes, counterpart, issue, and history. The OCCI describes a reported pattern in specified situations; it is not a conflict-personality test.
