Nonverbal Immediacy Scale — Observer Report (NIS-O)

Knowledge

NIS-O records how often an observer perceives a specified target displaying immediacy behaviors. Its total reflects that observer’s perspective and context, including relational and perceptual bias. Differences from self-report warrant investigation rather than automatic correction, and higher ratings do not independently prove appropriate behavior or effective communication.
