Metamessage

Knowledge

A metamessage is the relational meaning inferred from how an utterance is delivered and from the conversational convention it invokes, beyond its literal content. Intended support may be heard as doubt or control, so an inferred metamessage needs to be checked against context and the speaker’s own account.
