Justifications (account giving)

Knowledge

Justifications accept responsibility for conduct while contesting its wrongfulness. They may invoke lack of injury, the victim’s status, higher loyalties, or criticism of the accusers. Identifying the form of the explanation helps distinguish it from an excuse without endorsing its moral claim.
