Yarning: Treat Relationship as Part of the Research Method

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 284

The conversation can change purpose

Distinguish social, research-topic, collaborative, and therapeutic yarns so relational conversation does not become a disguised conventional interview.

Premise

Yarning changes what researchers should count as rigor. In Indigenous research, relationship is not preliminary small talk designed to improve extraction; it is part of the method. Bessarab and Ng’andu’s 2010 formulation distinguishes four yarn types that show when communicative purpose has changed. An open-ended conversation is not automatically yarning, and using the label without relational, cultural, governance, and analytic obligations can leave the underlying research architecture unchanged.
