Wax and Gold: Read Beyond the Literal Without Inventing the Hidden

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 269

The hidden reading still needs evidence

Wax and Gold makes layered meaning visible while requiring evidence before a contextual interpretation is treated as intention

Premise

Executive communication often assumes that competent listening means recovering one intended meaning from a message. The Ethiopian qene tradition known as säm-enna-wärq, or Wax and Gold, challenges that simplification. A statement can sustain an accessible surface meaning—the wax—while a deeper meaning—the gold—becomes available through wordplay, allusion, religious or political context, audience knowledge, or another interpretive convention.

The executive value is not permission to search every sentence for concealed motives. It is a discipline against literalism. Public wording may perform one function while carrying another for listeners who share the relevant context. Leaders therefore need to distinguish what was explicitly said, what contextual reading is plausible, and what evidence would justify treating that second layer as intentional or operationally consequential.

Model

In this series, Model names the editorial family primarily used to understand and explain communication: theories, frameworks, effects, traditions, principles and other conceptual resources. It is an umbrella for a route into the field, not a claim that every included object is a predictive model.

Editorial orientation · Category

Paradigms, Traditions & Metatheories

Provides a broad intellectual perspective within which multiple concepts, theories or investigations are developed. Traditions carry histories and commitments; metatheories examine how theories themselves are organized or related.
