Voice is more than airtime
Track promotive speaking up while keeping rater perspective, psychological safety, idea quality, and organizational response separate
Premise
The Van Dyne–LePine Voice Behavior Scale measures constructive suggestions, recommendations, and challenges intended to improve a work group. It captures promotive extra-role conduct rather than attitude toward management, willingness to talk, or ordinary job performance. A frequently speaking employee may show little voice; a quiet employee may voice a consequential concern.
For executives, the scale makes constructive challenge observable without turning it into a universal communication-health score. Voice is distinct from psychological safety: safety describes shared expectations about interpersonal risk, while voice is behavior that may or may not occur within that climate.
