The message arrives through someone else
Media influence often gains local meaning through domain-specific relationships that select interpret and retransmit information
Premise
Audiences are not isolated endpoints. People encounter institutional and media messages inside families, workplaces, communities, and other networks where information is interpreted, endorsed, resisted, and retransmitted. Two-Step Flow of Communication redirected attention from direct source-to-receiver effects toward the interpersonal relationships through which messages become credible and actionable.
Its durable proposition is not that influence always follows exactly two steps. The early election findings in The People’s Choice and the later formulation by Elihu Katz and Paul Lazarsfeld showed that informal personal influence mattered. Contemporary systems add direct, reciprocal, algorithmic, and multi-step paths, making interpersonal mediation a mechanism to investigate rather than a universal sequence.
