Expertise must be findable
Transactive memory explains how differentiated expertise becomes collective capability only when teams can locate, trust, update, and retrieve who knows what
Premise
Teams do not become collectively intelligent merely because the right knowledge exists somewhere among their members. A regulatory answer can sit with one specialist, a technical dependency with another, and a contractual constraint with a third while the current decision reaches none of them. Transactive memory explains the missing architecture: knowledge plus a usable directory of where it resides.
For executives, this turns expertise coordination into a memory-design problem. Who is consulted, whose answer is trusted, how responsibility changes, and how discoveries are redistributed determine whether distributed knowledge becomes available under pressure. The goal is not universal duplication, but reliable routing and integration.
