Talanoa: Treat Relationship as Part of the Evidence

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 278

The relationship shapes the evidence

Culturally located relational dialogue can surface meaning that scripted inquiry misses without becoming a generic interview method or pan-Pacific default.

Premise

Talanoa is an inherited Tongan and related Pacific conversational practice that modern scholarship has developed as a culturally grounded form of inquiry, storytelling, reflection, and reciprocal engagement. Its executive significance is methodological: the relationship is not merely a channel through which information is extracted. Who is present, what obligations exist, which language is used, and whether participants regard the encounter as legitimate shape what can be said and understood. Calling an informal interview “Talanoa” does not create cultural validity.
