Rasch Model: Test Comparability Before Trusting a Score

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 528

Junior staff read the item differently

The Rasch Model examines whether item responses warrant comparisons across people and groups, making scale design an executive governance decision.

Premise

A leadership questionnaire can produce precise numbers while asking questions that different employees interpret differently. The Rasch Model tests whether responses conform sufficiently to a specified probabilistic measurement structure to support comparisons. It places people and items on a common continuum and examines stability across relevant groups. Its most consequential warning is that numerical precision and construct validity are different achievements.

An organization considering a multilingual competence survey should scrutinize differential item functioning (DIF): a question can behave differently across groups even when respondents have comparable modeled levels. The decision then concerns the item, the work context, and the definition of the construct—not simply which score to publish.
