Process Consultation: Match the Consulting Logic to the Problem

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 302

Name the mechanism you are buying

Process work becomes governable when leaders can distinguish whether the intervention is changing interaction, systemic patterns, or the field of possible meaning.

Premise

A consultant can alter an organization without delivering a technical answer. Process-oriented consulting works on how a client system notices, interprets, discusses, and acts on its own situation. That makes the consulting relationship itself part of the intervention: questions, timing, feedback, access, status dynamics, and who owns the diagnosis all shape what becomes visible. For executives, the critical discipline is to know which process logic is being purchased. Schein’s Process Consultation, German-language systemic organizational consulting, and Dialogic Organization Development overlap in their attention to inquiry, yet they are not interchangeable versions of one method.
