Organizational Assimilation Model: Treat Membership as a Communication Lifecycle

Expectations relationships role negotiation competence and exit develop beyond a single onboarding event

Premise

Joining an organization is not a one-time transfer of policies. People arrive with expectations formed through education, previous employers, recruitment, interviews, employer branding, peers, and informal networks. Fredric Jablin’s Organizational Assimilation Model places communication at the center of how newcomers and organizations interpret one another, negotiate roles, build competence, and eventually manage departure.

The model reframes membership as mutual adjustment. Organizations socialize people by teaching expectations and routines; members individualize roles by questioning, adapting, and contributing. Assimilation therefore cannot be judged only by conformity or task completion. It develops across anticipatory socialization, entry and encounter, metamorphosis toward established membership, and disengagement, with relationships and identity changing throughout.

Explains how or why a communication process works by relating mechanisms, conditions or variables. Its value is an account that can guide inquiry into what produces an outcome, rather than a name for the outcome alone.
