LMX-7: Preserve Both Sides of the Leader–Member Relationship

Delegation can feel like abandonment

Measure perceived exchange quality in a specific dyad without averaging away disagreement or calling it leadership performance

Premise

Leader–Member Exchange 7 measures perceived quality in a specific leader–member working relationship. Seven questions address standing, understanding of work problems, recognition of potential, support, confidence, and overall working effectiveness. The subject is the dyadic exchange as one respondent experiences it, not leadership style in the abstract.

For executives, this makes recurring access, feedback, support, discretion, and obligation visible at the relationship level. A high score suggests a stronger perceived exchange. It does not establish that the leader communicates well with everyone, that the relationship is fair, or that both parties experience it the same way.
