Health Belief Model: Diagnose the Barrier Before Raising the Threat

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 116

More threat. The same barrier.

Health action depends on perceived risk expected benefit practical barriers timely cues and confidence as well as material conditions

Premise

Health communication often assumes that understanding a serious risk will produce action. People may nevertheless feel personally unlikely to experience the condition, doubt that the recommended action will help, anticipate costs that outweigh the benefit, lack confidence in performing the behavior, or never encounter a cue near the decision point. More threat information can miss the actual constraint.

The Health Belief Model emerged in the 1950s among U.S. Public Health Service social psychologists and was later formalized by Irwin M. Rosenstock. It gives leaders a structured diagnosis of beliefs surrounding a specific health behavior. The model is not simply a fear framework and does not claim that beliefs override access, cost, trust, habit, social conditions, or institutional barriers.

Explains how or why a communication process works by relating mechanisms, conditions or variables. Its value is an account that can guide inquiry into what produces an outcome, rather than a name for the outcome alone.
