Courtesy does not redistribute authority
Ethical Space makes power, history, worldview, and authority part of the communication architecture when Indigenous and Western systems meet
Premise
A respectful meeting can still be structurally unequal. Parties may receive equal speaking time while one institution has already fixed the agenda, methods, evidence rules, ownership terms, timetable, or decision rights. Willie Ermine’s Ethical Space of Engagement makes the relational space between Indigenous and Western worldviews itself an object of ethical analysis.
For executives and institutional leaders, this moves the problem upstream from facilitation. The question is not simply whether people were invited, heard, or treated courteously. It is whether the conditions of encounter recognize distinct authorities and knowledge systems without automatically making one the standard into which the other must translate. Communication becomes a governance question because participation matters only when it can affect the rules or consequences of the relationship.

Doctrines, Principles & Normative Frameworks
Sets out principles or criteria for what should be pursued, considered legitimate or done. Its contribution is evaluative or prescriptive: it gives reasons for judging conduct and arrangements, rather than merely describing their frequency.
