Implicit warning. Explicit risk.
Speaker restraint and listener inference work only when shared context can carry the meaning safely
Premise
Satoshi Ishii’s Enryo–Sasshi Model distributes communicative labor between two people. Enryo is speaker restraint: the communicator limits explicit expression after considering status, atmosphere, audience, and likely impact. Sasshi is receiver inference: the listener reconstructs meaning from timing, silence, omission, tone, role, prior interaction, and other contextual cues. Sparse wording can therefore contain substantial communicative work.
The pair is complementary rather than automatically effective. Restraint may preserve dignity and reduce unnecessary confrontation, but it can also conceal disagreement. Inference may demonstrate sensitivity, but it remains a hypothesis and can become projection. The model works best where participants share sufficient cultural, relational, and situational context; without that resource, economical expression becomes operationally expensive ambiguity.

Theories & Explanatory Models
Explains how or why a communication process works by relating mechanisms, conditions or variables. Its value is an account that can guide inquiry into what produces an outcome, rather than a name for the outcome alone.
