Make the tradition, corpus, context, and inferential steps explicit before treating language-in-use as organizational evidence
Premise
The same sentence can function as commitment, delay, reassurance, or institutional closure depending on its sequence, speaker, audience, genre, and setting. Discourse Analysis studies that patterned language-in-use across connected speech, writing, interaction, and other communicative material. It asks how meaning and social action are organized beyond the dictionary content of isolated sentences.
For executives, the method can reveal how responsibility, identity, agreement, or authority is accomplished in meetings, service calls, policies, and public communication. Yet “we used discourse analysis” names an umbrella, not a complete method. The value of the result depends on whether the analyst makes the chosen tradition and analytic operation visible.
