Delphi Method: Preserve Expert Independence While Making Revision Visible

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 403

Expert convergence needs a visible history

The Delphi Method separates independent judgment from controlled feedback so convergence and persistent disagreement can both inform decisions under uncertainty.

Premise

The Delphi Method structures expert judgment when available data cannot settle a consequential question. Instead of asking specialists to debate until one position dominates, it separates response from social interaction. Participants answer independently, receive controlled summaries of the group’s judgments and reasons, and then decide whether to retain, revise, or qualify their views. For executives, the value is not a manufactured consensus. It is a visible record of how informed judgment changes—or refuses to change—after exposure to competing reasoning.
