GLOBE Cultural Dimensions: Compare Context Without Stereotyping Individuals

Averages describe countries, not colleagues

GLOBE distinguishes societal practices, preferred values, and culturally endorsed leadership expectations so cross-national evidence can sharpen inquiry without becoming a script for individual behavior

Premise

The Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) research program compares societal culture without treating a country as one personality. Its architecture distinguishes nine dimensions of societal culture and, unusually, separates descriptions of current practices from judgments about how society should be. Gaps between “as is” and “should be” therefore become evidence rather than noise.

A global communication decision can encounter both prevailing norms and aspirations that oppose those norms. High power-distance practice, for example, does not mean every employee prefers directive leadership. The framework is most useful when it identifies contextual questions to test locally, not when national averages are projected onto individuals.

Model

In this series, Model names the editorial family primarily used to understand and explain communication: theories, frameworks, effects, traditions, principles and other conceptual resources. It is an umbrella for a route into the field, not a claim that every included object is a predictive model.

Analytical Frameworks, Typologies & Heuristics

Organizes dimensions, distinctions, types or questions so that a situation can be examined systematically. A framework supplies structure, a typology distinguishes forms, and a heuristic offers a usable way to orient judgment.
