Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 201
The patient heard something you did not
Item-level patient reports identify communication tasks for improvement while technical outcomes and competence remain separate evidence.
Premise
Clinical communication cannot be assessed solely through faculty observation or professional intention; patients directly experience whether they were respected, heard, informed, and involved. The Communication Assessment Tool gives that perspective a structured form. Its executive value is quality improvement around specific communication tasks, not a league table of clinicians. Patient ratings describe interpersonal and communication experience in healthcare; they do not measure diagnostic reasoning, technical skill, safety, clinical outcomes, or general communication competence.
