Blissymbolics: Build Generative Meaning Beyond Fixed Symbol Lists

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 419

Give the user more than a menu

Blissymbolics uses combinable semantic graphic elements to expand aided communication while keeping symbol-language design subordinate to the individual user’s access, learning, and interaction needs.

Premise

A communication system becomes more powerful when a user can construct new meanings instead of selecting only from a fixed menu. Blissymbolics is a semantic graphic language whose characters can stand alone or combine into larger Bliss-words. Its executive relevance lies in communication access: the design question is whether the system gives a person teachable ways to express increasingly precise relationships, actions, properties, and abstract ideas.
