Automated Readability Index: Screen Complexity Without Certifying Comprehension

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 531

Shut which valve?

The Automated Readability Index offers a quick text-complexity indicator while reader testing remains necessary for consequential instructions.

Premise

The Automated Readability Index (ARI) estimates surface reading difficulty from character length and sentence length. Its value is inexpensive, repeatable screening: editorial teams can identify text that warrants closer inspection across large bodies of instructions. The index cannot tell whether a reader can locate the right equipment, interpret an exception, or act safely.

A grade-level number becomes hazardous when it is treated as proof of understanding. Leaders governing safety, health, or operational communication need to distinguish a formula’s countable language features from the reader’s ability to execute the intended task.
