Active Listening: Understand the Dispute Before Deciding

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 530

The rating stood, the employee was heard

Active listening helps leaders test the speaker’s intended meaning while keeping empathic recognition distinct from agreement and decision authority.

Premise

Listening can fail even when a manager repeats every factual detail. Active listening seeks the speaker’s meaning, including feeling, stakes, and perceived consequences, and checks that understanding through responsive interaction. A corrected reflection may therefore be more useful than a flawless paraphrase that the speaker cannot recognize.

The immediate leadership consequence is sharper diagnosis before judgment. Recognition of a complaint does not concede that the complaint is factually correct, and a decision can remain contested after both sides understand each other. Listening creates conditions for responsible action; it does not decide the action.
