Communication Network Analysis: Govern the Pathways Behind the Organization Chart

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 189

Centrality can mean fragility

Precisely defined ties expose brokerage, bottlenecks, isolation, and reach without turning centrality into status.

Premise

Organization charts show formal authority; they rarely show how advice, interpretation, escalation, or routine information actually travels. Social Network Analysis shifts the unit of attention from individual attributes to relationships. For executives, that creates a structural diagnostic: which actors connect, in what direction, for what relation, within which boundary, and during which period. The resulting map can reveal dependencies and fragmentation that individual surveys miss, provided leaders resist reading network position as personal worth.
