Frontstage as False, Backstage as Real

Knowledge

The claim that frontstage is false and backstage is real misreads Goffman’s audience-relative regions. Public roles can express genuine commitments, and preparation can legitimately occur outside audience access. Analysis still examines contradictions and concealment, without treating a region’s visibility as proof of authenticity or deception.

Analytical Frameworks, Typologies & Heuristics

Organizes dimensions, distinctions, types or questions so that a situation can be examined systematically. A framework supplies structure, a typology distinguishes forms, and a heuristic offers a usable way to orient judgment.
