Nominal Group Technique (NGT): Protect Independent Input Before Group Influence Takes Hold

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 407

Protect input before the first speaker frames it

Nominal Group Technique separates silent idea generation, equal-turn sharing, clarification, and independent ranking so participation is structured before priorities are aggregated.

Premise

Nominal Group Technique structures face-to-face group judgment so early speakers do not define the agenda before others generate their own material. Participants first work silently, contribute through a controlled round-robin, clarify the shared list, and only then rank or rate priorities independently. The executive value is a visible sequence that protects contribution before discussion and judgment after discussion.
