Lean Communication: Design the Request-Response Path, Not Just the Message

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 300

The signal needs a response owner

Toyota-system communication becomes reliable when connections are explicit, abnormalities are visible, and signals carry defined response authority at the point of work.

Premise

Lean communication is an analytical umbrella for communication mechanisms embedded in the Toyota Production System, not one canonical Toyota tool. TPS makes work, connections, status, standards, and abnormalities explicit enough that people can know what should happen, identify deviation, request help, respond directly, and improve the operating system. That shifts the executive question from ‘Are people communicating?’ to ‘Is the critical interface designed so a request and response can be traced?’
