Krippendorff’s Alpha: Test Coding Reliability Before Trusting the Analysis

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 375

Agreement is not validity

A chance-corrected reliability coefficient can show whether coded data are reproducible under a specified design while leaving validity and substantive interpretation unresolved.

Premise

Krippendorff’s alpha asks whether observer-generated data are reproducible enough for the intended analysis. It compares the disagreement actually observed among coders, raters, judges, devices, or other data-generating processes with the disagreement expected from chance-like assignment given the observed value distribution. For executives relying on coded complaints, media analysis, audit classifications, or qualitative data, alpha changes the governance question from “Did the coders mostly agree?” to “Is the coding process demonstrably reliable under the design actually used?”
