Interaction Process Analysis: Turn Meeting Impressions into Observable Process

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 188

Lots of answers. Almost no questions.

Twelve coded interaction functions show what a group actually did without converting frequency into team quality.

Premise

A meeting remembered as collaborative may contain abundant advocacy and almost no inquiry. Robert F. Bales’s Interaction Process Analysis gives leaders a disciplined way to examine that difference. Trained observers code interaction acts rather than relying on retrospective impressions, making task and socioemotional activity visible across people and time. The method changes executive diagnosis from “How did the meeting feel?” to “Which interaction functions occurred, who performed them, and what sequence surrounded the decision?” The framework behind the twelve categories is treated under its own title.
