Communication Power: Map Who Programs and Connects the Networks

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 032

Reach does not guarantee access

Influence depends on the architecture of visibility, access, legitimacy, and connection—not message quality alone

Premise

Executive communication plans often begin with audiences, messages, and channels after the underlying power structure has already been set. Manuel Castells’s Communication Power reframes influence around networks and meaning. Power is relational: actors shape others’ decisions and possibilities by constructing meaning, programming network goals, and connecting strategic networks.

The practical shift is from audience lists to network maps. A compelling argument may remain peripheral if it never enters the institutions where legitimacy is assigned. A low-visibility connection between strategic nodes may matter more than mass reach. Platform rules, editorial standards, alliances, and categories structure what becomes communicatively possible before a message is evaluated.

Model

In this series, Model names the editorial family primarily used to understand and explain communication: theories, frameworks, effects, traditions, principles and other conceptual resources. It is an umbrella for a route into the field, not a claim that every included object is a predictive model.

Theories & Explanatory Models

Explains how or why a communication process works by relating mechanisms, conditions or variables. Its value is an account that can guide inquiry into what produces an outcome, rather than a name for the outcome alone.
