Visual Literacy: Govern What the Organization Makes Visible

Communication · Executive Insight Brief · 035

Visual priority is an operational decision

Visual choices direct attention and interpretation, but disciplined analysis must be paired with accessibility and performance testing

Premise

Executives routinely approve dashboards, safety instructions, investor materials, campaign assets, and transformation narratives whose visual organization influences what people notice first, connect, or overlook. Donis A. Dondis’s A Primer of Visual Literacy makes those effects discussable. It replaces taste-based reactions with a vocabulary for examining elements, hierarchy, contrast, composition, and the different layers through which images communicate.

The executive significance is not aesthetic polish. Visual equality can imply informational equality where none exists; weak hierarchy can conceal the required action; scale and placement can privilege one interpretation before the text is read. Leaders therefore need to evaluate how a design structures attention while resisting the claim that visual form has fixed, universal meanings.

Model

In this series, Model names the editorial family primarily used to understand and explain communication: theories, frameworks, effects, traditions, principles and other conceptual resources. It is an umbrella for a route into the field, not a claim that every included object is a predictive model.

Analytical Frameworks, Typologies & Heuristics

Organizes dimensions, distinctions, types or questions so that a situation can be examined systematically. A framework supplies structure, a typology distinguishes forms, and a heuristic offers a usable way to orient judgment.
